Objective: |
Flatten
abdomen by removing excess fat and skin and tightening
muscles of abdominal wall. Sometimes a hernia
repair is also necessary. |
| Length
of Surgery: |
2
to 5 hours. |
| Type
of Anesthesia: |
General,
or local with IV sedation. |
| In/Outpatient
Basis: |
Either
depending on individual circumstances and extent
of surgery. Combined procedures (liposuction/tummy
tuck) usually require longer stays. |
| Possible
Side Effects: |
Temporary
pain. Swelling, soreness, numbness of abdominal
skin, and bruising may be present. Tenderness
and/ or tiredness for several weeks or months. |
| Possible
Risks: |
Blood
clots can occur. Infection. Bleeding under the
skin flap. Poor healing resulting in conspicuous
scarring or skin loss. This can be addressed surgically,
therefore requiring the need for a second revision/procedure. |
| Approximate
Recovery Period: |
Back
to work: 2 to 4 weeks. More strenuous activity:
4 to 6 weeks or more. Fading and flattening of
scars: 3 months to 2 years. Use of topical preparations/products
can significantly minimize the appearance of scars.
Ask the doctor if you are concerned about scarring.
Moreover, Dr. Ortega is very cognizant about the
placement of scars and takes the patient’s lifestyle
into account when deciding what approach to take
regarding scar placement. |
